Turkey with Bread Dressing
My Grandmother and Mother’s recipe for a delicious turkey with bread dressing. Recipe is way over 50 years old. I made this for my family and my 3 daughters and still use Grandma’s recipe for their Christmas turkey with bread dressing.
Turkey
Cook giblets, liver, neck in 6 cups of water with 1 bay leaf and 2 onions for 2 hours. Let cool. Cut up giblets and remove meat from neck, etc. Brown 2 more onions and 4 stalks of celery.
Toast 1 ½ loaf of wheat bread. Cut into small squares. Pour hot liquid over bread and add 2 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. sage or to taste. Cover to steam.
When cool add 3 beaten eggs. Shake garlic salt in cavity of turkey. Rub shortening on turkey when stuffed with stuffing. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake at 400 degrees 5 or 6 hours depending on size of bird. Last hour remove foil to brown. When done make gravy with juice and oil.
