Scholarship Programs

Texas Angus Association (TAA) is very proud of the programs administering our Scholarship Plans. TAA is recognized for having the most outstanding Scholarship Program in the nation supporting Texas Junior Angus Association and National Junior Angus Association members.

The Texas Angus Association, in the fall of 2009, launched a project to establish a scholarship fund for the benefit of the members of the Texas Junior Angus Association. The goal of the project was to create a long standing fund that would provide a "Meaningful Financial Benefit" in the way of a scholarship for higher education for the children of Texas. The fund will be called, "Texas Angus Association Endowment Scholarship Fund." (TAAESF)

Awarding of the Competitive Scholarships

Each January at the Fort Worth Stock Show, The Texas Angus Association will award two competitive scholarships from the "Texas Angus Association Endowment Scholarship Fund." The scholarship recipients will be selected from members of the Texas Junior Angus Association who participate in the Junior Angus Show.

The person designated to judge the show will identify the Grand Champion Female, and the Reserve Grand Champion Female of the show. Should a situation arise where the exhibitors of the two champions are not Texas Junior Angus Association members, the chairman and committee members will ask the Judge to select the next highest placed exhibitors who are eligible to be awarded a scholarship? The judge will only be allowed to select scholarship winners from the next two lower levels. The break off point for awarding scholarships will be Division Winners and Reserve Division Winners that are present in the ring in the Grand Drive. If the judge is unable to find a TJAA member from these groups, the scholarship will not be awarded that year and the money will remain in the Fund.

The chairman and committee members will determine eligibility of potential scholarship recipients and request that they fill out a written contract within thirty days. Should a recipient decline the scholarship or is determined to not be eligible, the scholarship will be awarded to the next highest placed exhibitor. Texas Junior Angus Association members are only eligible to receive the scholarship one time.

2010 DONATION HEIFER PACKAGE

The Donation Heifer Package program was established by The Texas Angus Association to begin a tradition at the 2010 TAA Annual Banquet by auctioning a heifer to benefit the Texas Angus Association (TAA) Scholarship Endowment Fund. The first Donation Heifer was generously donated by Mike and Sue Bowlin of MJB Ranch of Weatherford, Texas.

Each of the following buyers contributed $500 to purchase the heifer for $8,500. Jennifer Ann Smith - JA Angus, Bob Pearson - Rock Bluff Ranch, Jim Benedict - Legacy Ranch, Jimmy & Glennette Goode - Goode Angus, Mike & Paula Phinney - Oak Valley Ranch, Ronnie Wallace - Wallace Ranch, Mark & Cindy Ahearn - Turner Meadow Ranch, Radale Tiner - Vita Ferm, Murl & Lucian Richardson, Roger Boyer - Boyer Angus, Rayford Pullen - Pullen Angus, Bob McClaren/James Burkes - 44 Farms, Kevin Gallagher/Mike Rutherford - Rutherford Ranch, Mike & Linda Cornett - Ten Roc, Dr. Robert Hogue - Hogue Cattle Co., Alton & Janice Holt - Holt Angus, and Ricky & Jason Smith - Salt Creek Ranch.

The heifer was then donated back and resold to Lyn Lesikar - Lesikar Ranch, Fort Worth, Texas. The proceeds from this sale provided funding for the "Texas Angus Association Endowment Scholarship Fund" from which funds were distributed to the top finishers in the 2011 Texas Junior Angus Show sponsored by the Fort Worth Livestock Show and Exposition.

2011 DONATION HEIFER PACKAGE

Mark & Cindy Ahearn, Turner Meadow Ranch, graciously donated the 2011Donation Heifer that was auctioned off Friday, January 21, 2011 at the TAA Annual Banquet, in downtown Fort Worth. The heifer was first purchased by a syndicate of buyers which included: McClung Ranch; Rutherford Ranch; Goode Angus; Hillhouse Angus; Pyssen Angus; MJB Ranch; Holt Farms; Hogue Cattle Co.; 44 Farms; Double Creek Farms; Oak Valley Ranch; SV Cattle Co.; BJ Angus; Foundation Angus Alliance; Wallace Ranch; Boyer Angus; Pullen Angus; Grand Bayou Farms; Shelton Farm; BSJ Farms; Cheshier Angus; Stephens Angus Ranch; Circle E Farms; ASH Angus LLC; Salt Creek Ranch; and Richard Jones.

The heifer was then donated back and resold to Olson Cattle Company, 2 Bar Angus and Goode Angus. Thank you to all involved - it was a huge success. The proceeds from the sale of the Donation Heifer provided the initial funding for Texas Angus Association Endowment Scholarship Fund. We expect the auction of the Donation Heifer to become a highlight of our Annual Membership Dinner Meeting.

TAA members have worked very hard to promote and coordinate the entire donation heifer package as evidenced in the pictures below. Success was guaranteed by the participation of concerned and generous Breeder Members, Suppliers and Vendors. One of the incentives provided by our Members, Suppliers and Vendors is the liberal package of goods and services received by the Buyer of the Donation Heifer.
